Timberwolves star Karl-Anthony Towns continued his Gatorade media appearances, this time teaming with Brooklyn Nets guard D’Angelo Russell to take on a pair of professional beach volleyball players.
Karl-Anthony Towns has already done plenty of sponsor/promotional appearances, and for a still-21-year-old, he’s shown quite a bit of media savvy. And that’s not even to mention his Disney XD appearances.
Two of his larger endorsements thus far have been Jack Link’s Beef Jerky and Gatorade. And this summer, the 2015 number-one overall draft pick spent a day playing beach volleyball with the #2 pick, D’Angelo Russell. They didn’t play by themselves, of course. They went head-to-head with a pair of professional beach volleyballers with instruction from another (Olympic silver medalist April Ross), and two of the three are current members of the U.S. National Team.
Russell predicted a win, but it apparently wasn’t close.
After switching sides it appeared as though the duo improved a bit, but Towns never quite got the blocking/setting skills down, and Russell…didn’t appear to acquire any volleyball skills over the course of the match. (Also, note Russell’s yellow Nike swoosh on his headwear and purple shorts…methinks that this was filmed pre-trade, or Russell still hasn’t loaded up on Nets gear as of yet.)
This appearance was part of Gatorade’s Beat the Heat program — which has nothing to do with beating the Miami Heat (circa 2011-14), but everything to do with teaching young athletes the importance of staying hydrated during the hot summer months.
Wolves fans can fully expect KAT to be involved in plenty of these types of videos and television appearances moving forward. As Towns’ star rises and the Timberwolves continue to gain more national attention as a collective group, they’ll continue to come at a fast and furious pace.
