MIAMI — Hassan Whiteside didn’t receive a single vote for the league’s top center on the preseason annual survey of NBA general managers. But Whiteside was one of five players to receive a vote for the best defensive player.
And the Bovada.lv offshore sports book also has Whiteside as one of the league’s top defensive players. Whiteside currently has the fourth-best odds to win this season’s Defensive Player of the Year award at 9-to-1 behind Golden State’s Draymond Green (8-to-5), San Antonio’s Kawhi Leonard (3-to-1) and Utah’s Rudy Gobert (13-to-4).
Bovada also has Whiteside as the favorite to lead the NBA in rebounding this season at 9-to-4. Detroit’s Andre Drummond has the second-best odds in this category at 12-to-5.
This isn’t a surprise considering Whiteside led the league in rebounding last season with 14.1 rebounds per game.
According to Bovada, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra is not among the favorites to win the Coach of the Year award, though. After finishing second to Houston’s Mike D’Antoni in the voting last season, Spoelstra enters the season with the eighth-best odds to earn the honor this season at 15-to-1 tied with Utah’s Quin Snyder and Minnesota’s Tom Thibodeau. Boston’s Brad Stevens is the favorite in this category with 4-to-1 odds to win the award.
In September, Bovada placed the over-under betting line for the Heat’s win total for the 2017-18 regular season at 43 1/2 games, which would have Miami as the sixth-best team in the East behind the Celtics, Cavaliers, Raptors, Wizards and Bucks.
Some other Heat items from Bovada’s latest odds released Tuesday …
* Bam Adebayo is listed with the 17th-best odds to win this season’s Rookie of the Year award at 66-to-1. Philadelphia’s Ben Simmons is the favorite at 3-to-2.
* Goran Dragic and Whiteside each have 250-to-1 odds to win the MVP award this season — tied for the 36th-best odds to earn the honor. Leonard is the favorite at 15-to-4.
