Rockets’ Troy Williams making an impression in Rio Grande Valley

The Rockets as expected on Monday signed guard/forward Troy Williams for the remainder of the season, assigning him to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers where he had played through his 10-day contract. They will use the balance of the season to evaluate a talented prospect, but Vipers coach Matt Brase has seen enough to at least form a first impression.

“Very versatile wing,” Brase said. “He is a good system fit with the way we play. He has length and athleticism to be a good defender on the perimeter. He handles the ball well and is a very good rim attacker in the halfcourt and in transition.

“He has been very effective in his five games with the Vipers in attacking, playmaking and being able to knock down 3s.”

Heading into Tuesday’s game, Williams, a rookie from Indiana, averaged 21.2 points, 4.4 rebounds and 3.4 assists, while making 52.8 percent of his shots in his five games with the Vipers.
