Golden State Warriors

Warriors clear NBA championship favorites to begin season

The Golden State Warriors cruised through the NBA playoffs last season with a 16-1 straight-up and 11-5-1 against-the-spread record. With the team’s “big four” still intact, the Warriors are heavy favorites to win the NBA championship again in 2017-18.

Golden State is a -160 favorite on the odds to win the NBA championship at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. Kevin Durant fit in seamlessly with Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green last season, creating an unstoppable force that earned the best record in the league in the regular season and blew through the competition in the postseason.

With the talent and chemistry on this team, it would likely take some injuries to deprive the Warriors of defending their championship.

The Cleveland Cavaliers (+550 to win the NBA championship) have met Golden State in each of the last three NBA Finals, and they’ll be the favorite to do so once again this year.

Kyrie Irving was swapped for Isaiah Thomas this offseason, creating an interesting dynamic between the Cavaliers and the Celtics this year. Boston projects to be Cleveland’s only legitimate threat in the Eastern Conference and is going off at +800 to win the title.

The team that made the biggest splash this offseason was the Oklahoma City Thunder. Already a playoff team with just Russell Westbrook leading the way, the Thunder added a pair of superstars in Paul George and Carmelo Anthony through trades.

Keeping all three players happy will be tricky as they are all used to being the focal point of the offense, but if they can find a way to jell as a unit, Oklahoma City could do some real damage. After entering the offseason as +6600 underdogs to win the NBA championship, the Thunder are now up to +1200.

Other potential contenders to win the NBA championship this year include the San Antonio Spurs (+1200), Houston Rockets (+1600), Minnesota Timberwolves (+2800), and Washington Wizards (+5000). San Antonio has won at least 50 games every season for the last 18 years, and a strong defensive system led by MVP-candidate Kawhi Leonard could help offset the high-octane offenses of Golden State, Houston, and Oklahoma City in the West.
