It appears that the off-season acquisition of Sean Marion and Drew Gooden have paid off. If the playoffs were to start today, the Mavericks would have the second seed. This team looks to make a large playoff push with the personnel in place. In recent years, the Mavericks have struggled defensively, but now they rank fifth in the NBA with total points allowed per contest. Their offense is also firing on all cylinders. They rank eighth in the NBA in total offense. These two things combined have made them a dangerous team to contend with not only down the stretch, but in the playoffs.
The team has a mix of season veterans with many playoff games under their belt and young players who are talented enough to guide the team. Juan Jose Barea is a quality backup to Jason Kidd. Sean Marion is an excellent addition to Dirk Nowitski and Josh Howard. Erick Dampier has a good backup in Kris Humphries. This team is about as deep as a team can get.
In 2005 the Mavericks faltered in the NBA Finals after jumping on the Heat two games to none. Their defense fell apart after Devin Harris and Juwon Howard, of the then Mavs, went down with injuries. Rick Carlisle has imbued into the team a defensive philosophy that has been installed into their backups so they will not run into that problem in the playoffs. Defense wins championships and that part is evident.
