Jean-Jacques Taylor, Cowboys insider for NBC 5 in Dallas-Fort Worth (KXAS-TV) and host of J Dub City from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. weekdays on 103.3 KESN-FM, answered your questions during a live chat Monday. Here are some highlights:
Question: What do you make of the Nerlens Noel situation?
JJT: Dude, this is crazy. Rick Carlisle has gotta do better. They offered this dude a $70M contract and now all of a sudden he’s not good enough to play a single minute for one of the NBA’s worst teams. C’mon, that’s silly. It’s not just basketball talent. You think he can’t play some pick-and-roll with DSJ? Nope. Carlisle has made a mess of this and he needs to fix it. This team doesn’t have enough good players to nail a dude like Nerlens on the bench.
Question: Has Dennis Smith been the best rookie so far?
JJT: He’s been terrific — everything you would want in a rookie. He’s just going to get better. Finally, the Mavs got lucky. If he stays healthy, he’s going to be a beast.
Question: I know the Mavs lost the last two games, but if they lose isn’t this a good way to do it? Remain competitive and be fun?
JJT: I guess, if you looking for good ways to lose. Actually, it points out to me just how hard it is to win at the NBA level. The best teams just toy with you until they get tired of toying with you and then they turn it on and beat you. The Mavs are the yarn. Every other team is the cat these days.
Question: Do you think Dennis Smith and Russell Westbrook is a good comparison?
JJT: It seems a tad early to make comparisons between a rookie and the MVP, a dude who seemingly gets triple-doubles every week. I will say he plays with a certain tenacity and ferocity that you hope will emerge over time as the same type of stuff that Westbrook has because that’s what makes him great.
