Dallas Mavericks: Is Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle overrated?

Kevin Sherrington, sports columnist for SportsDayDFW.com and The Dallas Morning News, answered your questions in a live chat recently. Here are some highlights:

Do you think Rick Carlisle is a bit overrated as a head coach?

Sherrington: Who is this? Is this you, Pop? Overrated? Uncle Ricky is one of the top two or three coaches in the league. General managers have rated him the best in making in-game adjustments, plays coming out of timeouts and such. He also does a fabulous job with the annual makeover of the roster by his bosses. Few successful coaches have ever had come up with a new identity every year, yet he does it. Donnie Nelson once told me they’d like Carlisle to be their Jerry Sloan, who coached the Jazz across parts of four decades. I think that’s a good plan.

How will Carlisle manage Dirk at the end of games now with the new timeouts thing and defense being a liability?

Sherrington: How is Dirk’s defense any more of a liability now than it ever was? He’s more likely to manage Dirk’s minutes according to how much time he’s already played and the situation.

Do you think Nerlens Noel gets more playing time than Dirk when it’s all said and done?

Sherrington: Hard to say. Dirk should probably play no more than 25 minutes or so a night. Can Noel get that much time? It’ll be close. He’s still got a ways to go to reach his potential, and it’ll be interesting to see how he reacts to that. He’s bet on himself this season, having turned down the multi-year contract. He’s not going to get the deal he wants if he’s playing fewer than 20 minutes.

Who should the Mavs start with Seth Curry out? Is Yogi the answer?

Sherrington: The NBA has changed so much over the last four or five years. The league no longer routinely rolls out a 5, 4, 3, 2 or 1. Sometimes you get three 1’s. I expect the Mavs will do that occasionally this year, with their proliferation of point guards. Carlisle likes to have multiple playmakers on the floor, which is why they encouraged Barnes to work on that aspect of his game.
