Dallas Mavericks: If the Mavericks miss out on DeAndre Ayton, Michael Porter Jr. would be a fine consolation prize

Newy Scruggs, sports anchor at NBC5 in Dallas-Fort Worth (KXAS-TV) and radio host weekly from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on NBC Sports Radio Sirius XM 213/202 and NBCSportsRadio.com, answered your questions in a live chat recently. Here are some highlights:

All of a sudden, the Mavs are starting to pile up wins. How many players in the upcoming draft, that if the Mavs got him, you would feel good about their future?

Newy Scruggs: I’d love to see the Mavs get a chance at drafting Arizona’s DeAndre Ayton. He is a great player. But if they end up with Luka Doncic, Marvin Bagley III, Jaren Jackson, and Sports Illustrated has the Mavs taking Michael Porter Jr. of Mizzou. He is 6’10 and can score. I’d love see him in Mavs uniform.

Now if Dallas can stop winning games…

If Dirk comes back next year, you think he comes off the bench for whoever they draft?

Newy Scruggs: Rick Carlisle said that as long as he is he coach in Dallas Dirk Nowitzki will start. He said that back before training camp. Unless DeAndre Ayton is a Maverick I can see him holding on to that stance.

How many guys on the Mavs right now are legit starters on a championship competing team?

Newy Scruggs: Two. Harrison Barnes and Dennis Smith Jr.

Did Harrison Barnes progress this year or was he basically the same guy as last year?

Newy Scruggs: Harrison Barnes got better. This Mavs team is flawed. Barnes will not be a superstar player. There are few superstars in the NBA. I think of Barnes like I did about Michael Finley. Fin was a darn good player and was a player on a championship team (Spurs).

Barnes won a NBA title with Golden State. He was a rotational player on that team and I think he can be the same for the Mavericks if they can continue to draft properly and build.

Is Doug McDermott a part of the Mavs’ future?

Newy Scruggs: Doug McDermott will have a role on this Mavericks team going forward. If you want a 2011 Mavs championship comp, think a better Peja Stojakovic. Doug is a good fit for what Rick Carlisle likes to do.

Next year will be the last of his rookie contract. I see him playing next to his high school teammate Harrison Barnes the next few years.
