Hornets Easily Handle Orlando | Charlotte Hornets

A tight game at the break quickly turned into a rout in the second half as the Hornets blew by the Orlando Magic in the third quarter on their way to a 109-88 victory on Friday, Dec. 9 in Charlotte. A total of five Hornets players scored in double figures as Charlotte closed out a short homestand with a third-straight win and its sixth victory in the last eight outings. The Hornets have also now won six of their last seven games against the Magic dating back to the 2014-15 NBA campaign.

Turning Point

Holding a six-point lead at halftime, the Hornets caught fire in the third quarter, connecting on 13-of-20 attempts from the field (65.0 percent), which also included knocking down 7-of-9 shots from beyond the arc (77.8 percent). Nicolas Batum drained all three of his shots from long distance in the frame, giving him a team-high nine points and surpassing Charlotte’s entire first-half total by himself. The Hornets ended up outscoring the Magic, 39-24, in the third quarter to open up a 21-point advantage and put the game out of reach for Orlando.

Hornets Player of the Game

Another sensational night for Nicolas Batum concluded with game-high totals in scoring (16 points), rebounding (9) and assists (7) for the hometown Hornets. Over his last five appearances, Batum is now averaging 14.2 points, 11.2 rebounds and 7.0 assists for Charlotte.

Magic Player of the Game

Serge Ibaka paved the way for Orlando with 12 points, a team-high seven rebounds and three assists in the loss. Ibaka has now scored in double figures in 18 of his 24 games so far this season.

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist tallied a game-high-tying 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting and seven rebounds… Kemba Walker finished with 15 points and five assists… Ramon Sessions and Jeremy Lamb each chipped in 12 points off the bench… Cody Zeller tacked on nine points and seven rebounds… The Hornets connected on 9-of-22 three-point attempts (40.9 percent)… Charlotte crushed Orlando on the glass, 59-40, establishing a new season high for rebounds… The Hornets also outscored the Magic in the paint, 48-30, and are now 8-2 overall this season when doing so.
