The Boston Celtics roller coaster season continued on Saturday after losing 105-103 against a team from Orlando Magic who lost six games to 500 and lost four straight.
After the game, Celtics point guard Kyrie Irving commented on the young players in the team:
Kyrie Irving had a lot to say about the post-game, but what stood out was "The young guys do not know what it takes to be a championship level team. What's required every day. And if they think it's difficult now, what will it look like when we try to reach the final? "
Kyrie added, "There was no waiting there last year. Everyone has played for free and easily. Everyone went beyond what they expected from themselves. This year? We all have great expectations. Players, coaches, everyone. And that's good, but we do not do it yet. "
Kyrie concluded with "We can make it happen. We must be better. I must be better. We have to win these games on the road. It's about me as a leader. I have to be a better leader and help bring us there. "
Irving knows something about playing for the championship teams. He was the general floor for the 2015-16 The Cleveland Cavaliers, who won the NBA finals on the 73 wins of the Golden State Warriors. Irving also helped guide the Cavs to an Eastern Conference championship alongside a crew including LeBron James and Kevin Love.
James led these teams, although Irving is clearly the second option. He is now the head of a young Celtics team that has had some success but has suffered inconsistencies this year. The Cs have a youth lineup with more than half of the members of the team having four years or less experience.
The Celtics played in the seventh game of the Eastern Conference final last year without Gordon Hayward for the entire season and Irving for the playoffs. But the C's are only fifth, in the Eastern Conference after mid-season.
For every impressive win against a tough opponent (eg a 135-108 win over the Indiana Pacers 28-14), there seems to be a puzzling defeat where the team seems lethargic (eg a home defeat of 111-103 against 10-33 Phoenix Suns).
We'll see if the young Celtics players answer the Irving call asking the team to improve soon, the team having a road match against the Nlyn's Brooklyn monday.
