<p class = "canvas-atom canvas-text Mb (1.0em) Mb (0) – sm Mt (0.8em) – sm" type = "text" content = "Tuesday night, Haywood Highsmith became the second basketball player Division II soccer ball active to receive an order from the NBA. "data-reactid =" 23 "> On Tuesday night, Haywood Highsmith was only the second division II basketball player to receive a call from the NBA, just hours before the Sixers were warned, Highsmith had just come to finish playing for the Delaware Blue Coats before heading to the Sixers' practice center in Camden, New Jersey to sign his two-way contract.

Before the game, even head coach Brett Brown said he probably would not see it long before.

But Highsmith's story was anything but predictable, so when Brown called his number while he was 5:14 left to play in the fourth quarter when Tuesday night's win over the Wizards, he still has a once challenged the odds.

From Baltimore, Maryland, to Wheeling Jesuit University, from the Sixers' summer league roster to the G-League signing, to the NBA for the first time in his life, that's all the way for the Sixers rookie.

We wanted to know a little more about the latest addition to the list of Sixers.

My father really introduced me to the game because he played basketball until his college years. We really stuck on it. I probably started playing around the age of two or three years, but I started shooting at an ordinary hoop at four or five years old.

I think I was 13 years old and I went for a dunk and I almost got it. So after that, he's like, okay. I think I'm getting too old for that. It's crazy.

Or is it when doubt begins to slip?

Yeah. I did not know which way I would go, if I would go abroad or try to play in the G – League, but I talked with my family and I was not there. I found an agent who really thought I was NBA caliber. player, and we stuck with a good plan. There have certainly been ups and downs all the way, where I am now, but it was one of the organizations that gave me an opportunity and it was really inspiring for me to get such an opportunity. Doubts have certainly arisen from time to time, but I always had the feeling of being able to play abroad somewhere. The question that was put to me was whether I could play in the G-League or the NBA.

You absolutely must have the mental strength as a person to get through things like that. I was expelled from the Sixers summer league team one day before leaving for Las Vegas, hard to swallow as a person, as a basketball player. But when you have a family support system like mine, they've always encouraged me and kept me positive. We have just stayed on a path and stay patient and, as is often said, good things are going to those who are waiting and a good thing has come with the G-League team.

<p class = "canvas-atom canvas-text Mb (1.0em) Mb (0) – sm Mt (0.8em) – sm" type = "text" content = "So, when you have received the call, and after your Blue Coats game in which you played earlier in the day, you will end up with the Sixers, what goes through your head?"data-reactid =" 36 ">So, when you have received the call and after your Blue Coats game in which you played earlier in the day, you end up with the Sixers, what does it come to mind?

I thought of a lot of things. Was it really happening? Did I dream?

And then, I had to go straight from my 905 Raptors match to Camden (where the Sixers facilities are), then go straight from the signing to the arena to play for the Sixers.

<p class = "canvas-atom canvas-text Mb (1.0em) Mb (0) – sm Mt (0.8em) – sm" type = "text" content = "And then, not even a practice and probably do not expect to have the time, but you score your first NBA bucket, and that comes from your Blue Coats teammate, Shake Milton. & nbsp; What do you think about remembering most of this night?"data-reactid =" 39 ">And then, not even a practice and probably do not expect to have the time, but you score your first NBA bucket, and this comes from your Blue Coats teammate, Shake Milton. What do you think about remembering most of this night?

I will probably consider this as one of the biggest days of my life right now. A lot of memories, wear this jersey and walk around the crowd in the biggest arena in which I have played since I play basketball, just happy. Where I come from, and just to be part of something like that. It's crazy to see how it goes and my family was there. One of the biggest days of my life forever.

The story continues

My father and I share the same name. He is a senior and I am a junior. I've heard a lot that I've had a good basketball name. Whenever I was in school and my teacher announced my name on the first day, they always said, "Wow, it's a great name. So I'm used to it.

<p class = "canvas-atom canvas-text Mb (1.0em) Mb (0) – sm Mt (0.8em) – sm" type = "text" content = "Do you have nicknames?"data-reactid =" 48 ">Do you have nicknames?

Some people call me Hay. Some people call me Wood. Some people call me Haywood. Once, my trainer called me H because I have two HH, a double H, a square H, I do not really like it.

Yes definitely.

I am a big cheesesteak guy but I have tried to stop eating them because they are not healthy for a guy like me. But provolone cheese, no tomatoes, no ketchup, salt and pepper on a good roll.

<p class = "canvas-atom canvas-text Mb (1.0em) Mb (0) – sm Mt (0.8em) – sm" type = "text" content = "Which current player have you searched for and why?"data-reactid =" 54 ">Which current player have you searched for and why?

Certainly a big fan of Kevin Durant, just a humble person like me, so one of my favorite players I've ever watched. He comes from the California region, which is not far from home, where I come from, so I respect him. I also like to watch Paul George, who does a lot of everything. A two-way player, type of superstar player. Those two, I watched a lot as they tried to play like them.

<p class = "canvas-atom canvas-text Mb (1.0em) Mb (0) – sm Mt (0.8em) – sm" type = "text" content = "What is Sixer currently capable of helping your development the most?"data-reactid =" 56 ">What is Sixer currently capable of helping your development the most?

Many of them. But Jimmy Butler, someone who has been in the league for a while and has been in big games, and who has just been a great player in the league, and another player who has come from a choice later (30th), and a player of the All-Star type. Its hardness, its granularity, I can certainly learn a lot from him

<p class = "canvas-atom canvas-text Mb (1.0em) Mb (0) – sm Mt (0.8em) – sm" type = "text" content = "What did you learn about Philly and you did not know before?"data-reactid =" 58 ">What did you learn about Philly and you did not know before?

They call this city the city of brotherly love, but you do not really know it as long as you do not go to the city and you do not see it, do not see the atmosphere of the city. The city of Philly is amazing. I've even earned about 3,000 subscribers since I was here!

Good things happen to those who wait. Hard work beats talent when talent does not work hard.

<p class = "canvas-atom canvas-text Mb (1.0em) Mb (0) – sm Mt (0.8em) – sm" type = "text" content = "Interests outside basketball?"data-reactid =" 62 ">Interests outside basketball?

I really like food. My aunt makes a huge salmon cake. I love seafood, being from Maryland. I am also a big animal. I like tigers and lions. I had used to watch Animal Planet at the time, there was something called Big Cat Diary that I had used to watch with my dad: was a show about big cats, lions, leopards, etc. And I play Madden and 2K.

<p class = "canvas-atom canvas-text Mb (1.0em) Mb (0) – sm Mt (0.8em) – sm" type = "text" content = "What advice would you give to other athletes other than D-I?"data-reactid =" 64 ">What advice would you give to other non-D-I athletes?

At the end of the day, if you have talent, you will have your chance somewhere. It's not because you do not play D-I that your luck with the NBA or the G-League is over. I am living proof that if you have a goal and you stick to a path, and you have support around you, you can do it. It may take time, but you just have to be patient. Many people do not understand that patience is a good trait to have as a person because many people are not patient, can not wait and just want to get there without putting all the work to be done in it. A lot of hard work to get here, but once you've arrived here, it's amazing, and my message would be: keep on hurrying. You can arrive here from anywhere.
