Electronic sport: Pandas arrive at CSTJ

A symbol of quiet strength, power and balance, the panda – under its likeable fluffy appearance – turns out to be a fierce and formidable adversary. It is for these reasons that the cyberathletes of the brand new electronic sport (e-sport) team at the Cégep de Saint-Jérôme will proudly bear the name of this animal. Not to mention that the panda belongs to the same family as the grizzly … emblem of the professional electronic sports team of Montreal!

To tame the brute force of our bears, the Cégep de Saint-Jérôme decided to call on Kevin Bertrand. A physical education teacher for five years, he has overseen various sports teams in recent years, namely those of the Lafontaine Academy (female juvenile basketball), Saint-Sacrement College (male and female juvenile basketball as well as junior hockey) and the Mont-de-Lasalle school (junior basketball).

If sport occupies an important place in his life, the same can be said of video games. Bathed in the world of electronic sport (e-sport) from its very beginnings, it stood out with its performances in Starcraft 2 and League of Legends. With his experience as a trainer and a fan of video games, there is no doubt that he will inspire our cyber athletes and help them refine their art!

A balanced program… just like our Pandas!

The Cégep de Saint-Jérôme's electronic sports program will welcome 22 student-athletes who will be playing in the world of League of Legends and Overwatch games, starting next fall. They will benefit from rigorous educational and physical training. They will be followed by a trainer, but also by a team of professionals – notably from the Laurentian Sports Excellence Development Council – who will ensure that they adopt a healthy and balanced lifestyle. Thus, video game sessions will be supplemented by periods of study scheduled, compulsory physical activity sessions and training on topics related to healthy living (sleep, nutrition, stress management , etc.).

It should be noted that participants in the electronic sport program will be selected at the end of a recruitment camp to be held this spring. They will not only have to excel behind a screen, but also adhere to the values of the program and maintain a good academic average.

The Pandas of Cégep de Saint-Jérôme will be members of the Collegiate Electronic Sports League, overseen by the Quebec Federation of Electronic Sports (FQSÉ), which brings together some thirty colleges offering the electronic sport program (E-sport).
